This Project, which I've never heard of before, promotes 'reforms in sentencing law' and alternatives to incarceration. And surprise, surprise, Mauer claims that mandatory sentencing and the three-strikes law in the United States have failed.
The U.S. approach has not reduced recidivism by ex-convicts. Two-thirds are re-arrested within three years of being released from prison, Mauer says, and half are back in prison.Notice he's not talking about crime, but about recidivism. What the American example of increased incarceration shows is that if criminals are in jail, they're not out on the street doing damage to society. Of course criminals are rearrested; that's because they're criminals.
The whole idea that criminals can be rehabilitated is one of the most persistent and pernicious hold-overs from Progressivism. Kids from good homes become criminals and from bad homes become good citizens. It's not one's upbringing that makes one a criminal as we should all know by now. A few months, or years, behind bars isn't going to change anything.
Mauer also believes racial profiling is the reason black men are seven times more likely than white to be in jail. This argument was totally debunked in City Journal earlier this year by Heather MacDonald:
Racial activists usually remain assiduously silent about that problem. But in 2005, the black homicide rate was over seven times higher than that of whites and Hispanics combined, according to the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics. From 1976 to 2005, blacks committed over 52 percent of all murders in America. In 2006, the black arrest rate for most crimes was two to nearly three times blacks’ representation in the population. Blacks constituted 39.3 percent of all violent-crime arrests, including 56.3 percent of all robbery and 34.5 percent of all aggravated-assault arrests, and 29.4 percent of all property-crime arrests. In short, blacks are in jail more because blacks commit more crime. One thing this makes clear is that if the Sentencing Project is patently wrong on this issue, it's like wrong on all the others.

Great post and the soft on crime rejects just cant handle the facts
Really good post. I agree that more blacks are in prison for longer because they commit more violent crime. Race doesn't factor in.
Personally, I don't think there are enough blacks in prison. At least not in the US. A lot of blacks commit crimes as a way of life. Some of these blacks get caught, and some of those caught go to prison. That's how it works here.
It's not racist to go after criminals - even if they're black.
Posts like these make me ashamed to be a white person. The racism here is amazing.
If blacks make up 40% of violent crime arrests, then the other 60% were WHITE.
If blacks commit 52% of murders, then the other 48% are WHITE. In fact, the majority of murderers on death row in America are WHITE!
Now here's the golden opportunity for your totally justified liberal policy hate moment. If you really analyze the data, you'll realize that the majority of black incarceration takes place in Democratic run districts - cities like NYC, LA, DC, Chicago, and Detroit. If anything, the black crime is more a result of continuously failed liberal policies & masked liberal racism.
Hi Lovelylady78,
You're having a little trouble with your math. Let me help you out. African-Americans make up 13 percent of the U.S. population. So if they are responsible for 52 percent of the murders, they are disproportionately committing these crimes. Or to put that another way. If blacks and whites committed murder at the same rate, blacks should only be responsible for 13 percent of the murders.
Do you get it now?
Best regards,
Frank Hilliard
