Americans are missing the point about health care reform; it's not the delivery of care that is a threat to your country, it's the way socialized medicine changes the debate over personal freedom. Huh? Freedom, that's the issue.
In Canada because we have state run medicare, everyone pays for everyone's coverage. If you're sick, go to the doctor, or the hospital or call 911; someone will look after you. That part works surprisingly well. Don't believe what you hear about waiting lists; sick people get treated in Canada faster than you would believe.
The two obvious flaws in our system are that fee-for-service was maintained, making doctors the highest paid sector in the economy, and union bargaining was permitted, allowing health care unions to raise salaries to levels far higher than the private sector. So, while overall spending on health is lower than in your country, the health care community has found the gravy train.
The real problem is far deeper and has to do with the 'Progressive' agenda.
Progressives, or 'liberals' as you call them, want to improve society, eliminate disparities and make everyone nicer. The think they can do this—overcome human nature—with social engineering. And they are constantly looking for ways and means.
Health care reform is one of the tools. If they get the 'public option' passed through Congress it will quickly bankrupt all the existing private options. You'll wind up like Canada with one payer for everyone's care. This, in turn, opens the way for Progressives to get you to change your behaviour to reduce your impact on the system.
Stop smoking. Stop eating fast food. Stop driving so much, or so fast. Stop gun ownership. Stop motorcycling. Stop private flying. Stop boating.
You think I'm kidding? Canada is currently licensing all boat owners in the interests of 'safety.' Eventually, you'll have to pass a test to go fishing. It's just like the gun registry, also pushed in the interests of 'safety'. That is going to be turned into a ban on handguns as soon as the Liberals get back into power. There is even an attempt to go back to prohibition of alcohol, first for drivers, then for everyone. Again it's 'safety' and the 'cost to the system' of 'accidents' causing 'injuries.'
See what I mean? Every human activity can be linked to health care one way or another. Progressives love this stuff; and they'll really love the excuse they'll use to push you around. They'll say you cost the health care budget something, statistically, every time you act outside the approved norm.
It's North Korea coming to Washington, and you should fight it with all the resources you can.
Good luck.
