The New Woman: Not Very Feminine

Take a look at this picture; it's of a model for Athleta, a line of women's sports clothes owned by Old Navy. There are, on the Athleta website, many more who look just like her.

Athleta model wearing a Nusa rollover skirt

She has a pretty face and this outfit has both striking colour and texture; so what's my point?  My point is that this woman has no waist, almost no boobs and virtually no hips. This woman could, with very little effort, pass for a man.

How did Western society get to this point where a lot of young women look like young men? They not only have jobs in formerly male-dominated industries, they are growing every day more like young men physically.

This is not the only example. Check out any women's magazine, check any fashion store, indeed be bold and check out some porn from the American Midwest. You won't find a waist in the place.

Let's go back and review what women used to look like when the waist to hip ratio was around 0.7

Lucy Mecklenburgh of The Only Way Is Essex

This woman is not attempting to look like a man, is not dressing like a man and couldn't pass for one if she wore a suit.

In a larger sense, and not just talking about shape and size, do we really want to go down this road?  Is this wise. Do we want our women to look like us?

Is it safe to have women with small breasts and small pelvises?  Is it safe for society to have women who not only don't want babies but can't physically have them?

I wish someone were paying attention to this because I don't see any examples of calls for concern in the media. It's just A-O-K with everyone, apparently.

I wonder.

I wonder if we aren't about to lose one of the things that made life worthwhile.

And, indeed, possible.

Update
Acutally, Kathy Shaidle has noticed, as has the Daily Mail (note the dates).

Update II
More shapeless women.

The natural woman was attractive to the male of the species for her child bearing attributes, which started with the hips. some how we have tried to educate this principle out of both males and females and have removed the total concept of procreation from our society. I suspect that, like me most real men still look at women that arn't or look like men with a lust for a woman that looks like she can bear a child. It is part of the genetic code and real women look for a man that has a spine and can help support the off spring.

Sad to say that in many precincts the young woman in the Athleta ad is in fact hourglassy compared to the average woman, especially in much of the midwest and south. The prevalent shape, as attested by a walk through any grocery or big box store, is that of a grossly swollen barrel--the structural inverse of the hourglass. This rampant ballooning seems a lot more dire, in aesthetic terms at least, than this typical model's relatively flat-chested and narrow-hipped androgyny. As relatively "un-womanly" as this androgyne paradigm might be it is positively Jayne Mansfield-like compared to the vast waddling pig-women so increasingly prevalent across our overfed land.
