I wonder if you've ever heard of, or seen, an example of high contrast photography? Here's someone who has a wonderful grasp of this new field, Michael James Slattery:
If you click on link above you can see some examples of his work, but nothing compares with seeing it in person.
His technique involves taking multiple pictures in different light levels, some long time exposures at night, and then combining them into one image. They're astoundingly beautiful.
By coincidence I yesterday downloaded a copy of Corel Paint Shop Pro X4 (yes, Corel is still around) and one of the first things I found was that it includes a digital photo combination tool that will let you try the same technique.
This won't make you or me another Michael James Slattery, but it will help you appreciate what he's done.

Thanks heaps for the props. How did you find out about me?
Hi Michael,
We had a brief discussion at the art show in Palm Springs (I was the one with the Blue Healer cross) and said right away I thought you were a genius.
I mean it and I intend to buy a print later.
All the best,
Frank Hilliard
